9 Pillars of Effective Organizational Development & Leadership

šŸ‘‹ In my career, I've been faced with some key organizational challenges and have come to understand how to look under the hood of nonprofit organizations. šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§

šŸ–¼ļø I've formed a framework I often use to assess organizational health and leadership effectiveness that I call the Nine Pillars of Effective Organizational Development & Leadership:

1ļøāƒ£ Mission & Strategy → Implementation šŸ—ļø

Is your work actually delivering on your mission?

Do programs, people served, and work plans clearly connect to strategy?

2ļøāƒ£ Organizational Structure šŸ—¼

Does your structure support today’s strategy—or yesterday’s history?

Clear roles, decision rights, and cross-functional collaboration matter.

3ļøāƒ£ Resources šŸ’µ šŸ‘„Ā

Do you have sustainable income, the right mix of staff and volunteers, and a clear revenue pipeline?

Are you reaching the people you aim to serve?

4ļøāƒ£ GovernanceĀ šŸ—£ļø

Who decides what—and who has authority?

Is the board focused on governance, leadership focused on operations, and succession planned?

5ļøāƒ£ Organizational Culture 😁

How do your values show up day to day?

Think norms around communication, meetings, accountability, conflict, and how people are treated.

6ļøāƒ£ Team: Talent & Performance šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”¬šŸ¤¹šŸ•ŗĀ Ā

Do goals, capacity, feedback, and evaluation systems support success?

Are appreciation, compensation, and growth taken seriously?

7ļøāƒ£ Equity, Power & InclusionĀ šŸŸ°āœ…Ā

How does power operate in your organization?

Is lived experience present in decision-making and practice?

8ļøāƒ£ Systems & Infrastructure šŸ›ļø

Do your systems help or hinder the work?

Technology, communications, budgeting, and operational tools all count.

9ļøāƒ£ Leading Through ChangeĀ šŸ“ˆšŸ“‰Ā

How do you lead in adversity—or abundance?

Do you manage with empathy, clarity, and steadiness when things shift?

šŸŽŠ When these pillars are aligned, organizations don’t just function — they thrive. When they’re misaligned, even the best intentions struggle.

Curious what you think, which pillar do organizations most often underestimate? šŸ¤”
