Reengaging Your Board Before the Year-End Push

Boards tend to go quiet over the summer, and September is the last real runway to reengage them before year-end campaigns, ask amounts, and holiday stewardship are already underway. Waiting until October or November to activate your board means asking for help right when everyone — including your board members — is at their busiest. Here's how to use September well.

Move from passive to active now, not in December. If board engagement has been mostly reports and updates over the summer, September is the moment to shift toward action: committee responsibilities, roles as ambassadors, and focus on campaign and personal giving should all be on the table before Q4 begins in earnest.

Make the ask concrete and time-bound. A vague request like "help with fundraising" or "help think about strategy" rarely produces results. Something specific — "identify three contacts to steward by October 1" or “pressure-test our three-year strategic priorities for the September board meeting" — gives board members a clear, achievable task and a deadline that keeps momentum going.

Share context, briefly. A short update on where the organization stands heading into fall — increased competition for grant dollars, report out on key initiatives for Q4, whatever's most relevant to your organization — helps board members understand why their engagement matters more this particular fall, rather than treating it as a routine ask.

Reconvene dormant committees. Committees are especially prone to going quiet over summer. September is the natural moment to restart a regular cadence that carries the board through year-end.

Lead with momentum, not just need. A quick story about a recent program win or donor impact re-energizes board members who've been out of the loop, and reframes their engagement around contributing to something going well — not just filling a gap.

The takeaway: boards that reengage in September show up meaningfully in Q4. Boards that first hear from you in November are starting from a standstill right when your organization needs them most.
